Whitecourt Power commenced operations in 1994 and is one of the largest biomass power generating facilities in Alberta.
A majority of the wood waste fuel used by Whitecourt Power is supplied under a long-term contract by Millar Western, which has been a leader in Alberta’s forest products industry for more than a century with a particular focus on sustainable, responsible management. We use about 300,000 tonnes of wood waste fuel in our operations every year, which is about 12,000 semi-trailer truck loads.
We sell a majority of the power we generate under a long-term contract to TransAlta Utilities Corp., a subsidiary of TransAlta Corporation, Canada’s largest publicly-traded generator and marketer of electricity and renewable power. The balance of the electricity that we generate is sold in the Alberta Power Pool at the hourly spot price.
Whitecourt Power is 100% owned by Capstone Infrastructure Corporation (CIC), which is publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange
(TSX: CSE). CIC’s mandate is to invest in essential infrastructure businesses in Canada and internationally, which could include power generation or transmission, utilities, or transportation, such as roads or bridges. CIC’s portfolio currently includes investments in gas cogeneration, wind, hydro and biomass power generating facilities, representing approximately 350 MW of installed capacity and a 33.3% interest in a portfolio of district heating businesses in Sweden. CIC is also currently developing a 20 MW solar power facility in Ontario.
